Washington, DC – Today, Rep. Derek Tran (CA-45) raised the flag of the former Republic of Vietnam, recognized around the world as the Vietnamese Heritage flag, outside his office in Washington in observance of the 50th anniversary of the fall of Saigon. This display honors the legacy of the fall of Saigon, also known as Black April, and serves as a reminder of the strength of the Vietnamese community in the face of adversity.
Washington, D.C. – This Wednesday, April 30, Congressman Derek Tran (CA-45) will host and participate in a series of events commemorating the 50th anniversary of the fall of Saigon, also known as Black April or “Tháng Tư Đen”.
In 1984, volunteers stood outside supermarkets in Orange County, clipboards in hand, helping fellow Vietnamese Americans register to vote.
Van Tran, then a freshman at UC Irvine, was one of them.
Freshman Rep. Derek Tran (D-Calif.) flipped a Republican seat in November by hundreds of votes, a minuscule total which he attributes to his strength in the Vietnamese-American community.

Fifty years after the oppressive communist regime took hold of South Vietnam on April 30, 1975, and fifty years since the first wave of the exodus, Rep. Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Derek Tran sent a letter to Secretary of State Rubio requesting immediate assistance to secure the release of Le Huu Minh Tuan. The government of Vietnam has faced consistent criticism for its human rights record, particularly regarding its treatment of political dissent. Many journalists, human rights advocates, and activists like Mr. Tuan have been unjustly detained under questionable circumstances.
