Tran Introduces Resolution Recognizing June 19th as Veterans of the Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces Day

Thursday, June 19, 2025

Washington, DC – U.S. Representative Derek Tran (CA-45) introduced a Congressional Resolution in commemoration of the sacrifices and contributions of military personnel who fought to defend South Vietnam from North Vietnamese communist forces. The resolution also recognizes June 19th, 2025, as Veterans of the Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces Day, or Ngày Quân Lực in Vietnamese, honoring Veterans of the former Republic of Vietnam.

The full text of the resolution can be found HERE.

“Today and every day, we are reminded of the soldiers who fought valiantly for the Republic of Vietnam in the name of freedom and democracy. More than 260,000 South Vietnamese soldiers gave their lives in service and over 58,000 United States soldiers perished fighting alongside them. This day symbolizes not only the formation of the Republic’s military but also the spirit of resilience that defines the Vietnamese people,” said Representative Derek Tran. “Today, we honor the legacy of our fallen heroes and recommit ourselves to the ongoing fight for freedom and democracy.”

Although the Republic of Vietnam was dissolved following the 1975 fall of Saigon, the commemoration of Armed Forces Day remains a significant moment among Vietnamese diasporas around the world. Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces Day serves as a time for remembrance of their ultimate sacrifices, a celebration of their legacy, and a reminder of the impacts of war on generations of Vietnamese people.

Congressman Tran is the first Vietnamese American elected to the U.S. Congress from California and the son of refugees who fled communist Vietnam. California’s 45th Congressional District is home to Little Saigon, the largest Vietnamese diaspora in the world outside of Vietnam.
