Representative Tran Votes Against Largest Rollback of Health Care Coverage in American History
Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Representative Derek Tran (CA-45) voted against the Republican-led “One Big Beautiful Bill,” which strips health care away from 17 million Americans and threatens over 40 million Americans’ SNAP benefits. The legislation represents the largest cut to health care in American history.
The bill will have devastating impacts on thousands of people in California’s 45th congressional district and millions around the country. In CA-45, over 200,000 people rely on Medicaid, over 60,000 people rely on SNAP, and families can expect their health care premiums to go up by $2,500 and their energy bill to rise by nearly $700.
Over 17 million people nationwide are now at risk of losing healthcare coverage they currently receive through Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act, including over 2 million people in California alone. This bill also threatens access to food for the 2.5 million children in California who depend on free school lunches.
“My constituents sent me to Congress to fight for lower costs and safer communities. This un-American bill accomplishes neither of those goals and will instead rip resources away from hardworking families while giving tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy. I firmly rejected this effort to kick millions of Americans off their health insurance, double-tax millions of California’s hardworking families by capping the SALT deduction, and take food off the table of children, seniors, and Veterans,” said Rep. Derek Tran. “When my parents came to California as refugees, Medicaid, SNAP, and Section 8 housing helped my family achieve the American dream. Republicans chose to help out their wealthy friends instead of the family that can’t afford food, the child that can’t access lifesaving treatment, or the Veteran at risk of losing his house. The American people deserve better than this.”
The Senate amendment to the so-called One Big Beautiful Bill Act (H.R. 1) passed by a vote of 218-214. The legislation will now head to the President’s desk for a signature.
Representative Tran has consistently rejected attempts to cut funding for Medicaid, including by voting against the Republican budget proposal that eliminates billions in funding for critical services. He also signed a discharge petition in the House to bring H.R. 2753, the Hands Off Medicaid and SNAP Act, to the House floor for a vote. In an effort to address the affordability crisis facing families across the country, Representative Tran recently helped launch the Lowering Costs Caucus alongside Representatives Hillary Scholten (MI-03) and Greg Landsman (OH-01). The caucus is focused on bringing down everyday costs for hard-working Americans and delivering meaningful economic relief for working families. Tran also serves on the New Democrat Coalition’s Economic Growth and Cost of Living Working Group and the Congressional Dads Caucus, which aims to ease the cost burden on working families by advocating for the expanded child tax credit, affordable child care, and paid family leave.
Congressman Derek Tran represents California’s 45th Congressional District. Serving his first term in Congress, Congressman Tran is a member of the House Armed Services Committee and House Small Business Committee, where he is Ranking Member of the Oversight, Investigations, and Regulations Subcommittee. Congressman Tran is the son of Vietnamese refugees, a Veteran, and fought for consumers as an attorney before entering Congress.
