Representative Tran Urges People Over Politics In Response to State of the Union Address

Tuesday, February 24, 2026

Washington, DC – U.S. Representative Derek Tran issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s State of the Union Address:

“Tonight, I went to the Capitol to bring the voices of my constituents directly to the President. I listened to President Trump’s speech with an open mind and a commitment to the people of Southern California.

“Unfortunately, President Trump continues to employ chaos and lawlessness as a governing strategy. I heard a speech completely disconnected from reality and totally ignorant of the real challenges facing the American people. Instead of a plan to lower costs, keep our communities safe, and rein in federal overreach, I heard nothing but vitriol, division, and political gamesmanship.

“Instead of a plan to help small businesses thrive, President Trump doubled down on the illegal tariffs that will shutter their doors. Instead of a plan to refocus ICE on hardened criminals, President Trump continues his campaign of terror in our communities. Instead of a plan to care for our troops and their families, President Trump vowed to drag America into yet another forever war.

“I’m ready to work with anyone, in any party, who is serious about lowering costs, protecting our communities, and defending our democracy. The people of Southern California deserve leadership that will put people over politics and deliver the change we need.”

Since entering office, Representative Tran has fought for policies that make life easier, safer, and more affordable for LA and Orange County residents. He founded the Lowering Costs Caucus alongside Representatives Hillary Scholten (MI-06) and Greg Landsman (OH-01) to address the root causes of rising prices, and has introduced legislation to bring down health care and food costs for everyday families. He has repeatedly rejected legislation that would make essential health care more expensive for Californians, and recently voted to pass a three-year extension of the Affordable Care Act’s cost-saving provisions through the House of Representatives. Tran has also championed efforts in Congress to increase transparency and accountability in ICE operations. He recently co-led the ICE and CBP Constitutional Accountability Act with Representative Andrea Salinas (OR-06) and Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) to provide a path for legal recourse for citizens whose Constitutional rights have been violated by ICE.
