Representative Tran, Congressional Dads Caucus Members Unveil “Babies Over Billionaires” Bill Package to Eliminate Tariffs on Baby Essentials
Washington, DC – U.S. Representative Derek Tran (CA-45) joined Congressional Dads Caucus Chair Jimmy Gomez (CA-34) and fellow members of the Congressional Dads Caucus to unveil a new six-bill legislative package as a part of their Babies Over Billionaires initiative, a push to lower costs for working families by eliminating harmful tariffs on essential baby products.
Each bill in the package, introduced by a different member of the Dads Caucus, targets a specific category of baby essentials.
As part of the “Babies Over Billionaires” bill bundle, Representative Tran introduced the Baby Food Tax Relief Act to exempt essential baby feeding products–including formula, high chairs, and baby bottles–from President Trump’s reckless tariffs to lower costs for hard-working parents. Original cosponsors of the Baby Food Tax Relief Act are Representatives Gomez Horsford, Subramanyam, and Figures.
Dads Caucus members say the need for relief is urgent — and personal.
"As a dad of three young kids, I know just how expensive raising a baby can be. As prices skyrocket under President Trump’s reckless tariff policies, working families are under even more stress as many struggle to make ends meet. I’m proud to introduce legislation, alongside my fellow members of the Dad’s Caucus, to exempt necessities like baby formula, highchairs, and baby bottles from these tariffs,” said Representative Tran. “This should not be a partisan issue. I hope that my colleagues on both sides of the aisle will join me to bring down costs for working families and make sure that our kids can access the resources they need to grow and thrive.”
“Any parent, including myself, knows how expensive it is to keep up with kids growing out of their clothes. Working families shouldn’t have to choose between paying rent and buying their child new shoes,” said Rep. Jimmy Gomez (CA-34). The Baby Clothing Tax Relief Act will repeal unfair tariffs on baby apparel and help give parents the breathing room they need. This is what our Babies Over Billionaires agenda is all about — putting families first, not protecting CEOs and billionaires.”
Other legislation in the Dads Caucus legislative package includes:
- The Baby Clothing Tax Relief Act, led by Representative Jimmy Gomez (CA-34);
- The Baby Sleep Tax Relief Act, led by Representative Shomari Figures (AL-02);
- The Baby Play Tax Relief Act, led by Representative Brad Schneider (IL-10);
- The Baby Safety Tax Relief Act, led by Representative Suhas Subramanyam (VA-10), and;
- The Baby Hygiene Tax Relief Act, led by Representative Steven Horsford (NV-04)
Together, the legislation would repeal tariffs that have driven up prices on everyday items families depend on, including formula, diapers, toys, cribs, clothing, and strollers.
Since taking office, Representative Tran has been focused on solving the cost-of-living crisis and championed legislation to lower prices for working families. Tran recently launched the Congressional Lowering Costs Caucus with Representatives Hillary Scholten (MI-03) and Greg Landsman (OH-01), where he will continue to work with his colleagues to develop solutions to make life more affordable for American families. He has consistently rejected legislation that would increase the cost of basic necessities like food and health care, including voting against the Republican budget proposal that would eliminate billions in funding for Medicaid and SNAP. Tran also serves on the New Democrat Coalition’s Economic Growth and Cost of Living Working Group and the Congressional Dads Caucus, which aims to ease the cost burden on working parents by advocating for the expanded child tax credit, affordable child care, and paid family leave.
