Rep. Derek Tran Releases Statement on New GOP Budget Provisions to Further Erode Access to Healthcare
Washington, DC – Rep. Derek Tran (CA-45) reacted to the new GOP-led budget provisions that would increase barriers to healthcare for working families.
Last week, the House Energy and Commerce Committee held a 27-hour markup to debate provisions of a portion of a Republican-led budget package that is scheduled for a vote by the full House this week. Among the provisions added with little bipartisan input was a requirement that Americans earning at or just above the poverty line cover a portion of their own Medicaid costs. House Republicans are also set to prevent low-income Americans who don’t qualify for Medicaid from purchasing subsidized healthcare plans through the Affordable Care Act. If passed as it stands, the Republican proposal would eliminate health coverage for 13.7 million Americans.
“Republicans’ ongoing scheme to gut Medicaid and the critical healthcare plans offered through the Affordable Care Act will make Americans less healthy and put more strain on our healthcare infrastructure. This plan increases the deficit by billions of dollars while giving tax breaks to billionaires - doing nothing for the real challenges facing working American families,” said Rep. Derek Tran. “Because of this proposal, working families will experience more barriers to accessing treatment at a time when they are already struggling to keep up with the high costs of everyday goods. Those denied Medicaid due to red-tape reporting requirements might be priced out of healthcare coverage entirely. Republicans in the House are putting the health and well-being of our communities at risk, all to accommodate major tax breaks for billionaires. I won’t stand for this betrayal of our constituents.”
