Rep. Derek Tran to Introduce Bipartisan Commemorative Resolution, Hold Event Series on 50th Anniversary of Fall of Saigon
Washington, D.C. – This Wednesday, April 30, Congressman Derek Tran (CA-45) will host and participate in a series of events commemorating the 50th anniversary of the fall of Saigon, also known as Black April or “Tháng Tư Đen”.
In Washington, Rep. Tran will hold a press conference at the U.S. Capitol recognizing the 50th anniversary of the fall of Saigon and honoring the sacrifices of former Republic of Vietnam veterans and U.S. veterans who fought alongside one another in the name of freedom and democracy. A roundtable discussion with Vietnamese human rights activists and former prisoners of conscience will follow. Congressman Tran will also host a Black April Commemoration event, where community leaders will gather to share personal journeys of struggles, triumphs and resilience. Rep. Tran will lead these events from Washington, the center of American power, to amplify his community’s voice and share their history from the national stage.
Black April is a solemn time for the Vietnamese community to remember the sacrifices of those who fled their homeland in search of freedom, and to honor the resilience of the refugees who have rebuilt their lives around the world. Rep. Tran is the first Vietnamese American elected to the U.S. Congress from California and the son of refugees who fled communist Vietnam. California’s 45th Congressional District is home to Little Saigon, the largest Vietnamese diaspora in the world.
