Rep. Derek Tran Fights to Lower Taxes for California Families

Tuesday, May 20, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Derek Tran (CA-45) stood with his colleagues, Reps. Laura Gillen (NY-04), Brad Schneider (IL-10), and Josh Gottheimer (NJ-05), to demand the repeal of the cap on state and local tax deductions, known as “SALT.”

Rep. Derek Tran is co-leading an amendment to the Republican-led budget bill with Rep. Laura Gillen to repeal the cap and give Californians the tax relief they deserve.

Unless the SALT cap is eliminated, California residents will continue to face higher taxes—even though California already pays more in taxes than the state receives in services.

“When President Trump capped SALT in 2017, he cost California’s middle-class families $12 billion annually in new federal taxes. I am proud to stand with Reps. Gillen, Schneider, and Gottheimer today to demand the permanent elimination of the SALT cap–anything less would be a betrayal of our working families,” said Rep. Derek Tran (CA-45). “This is about doing what’s right for our constituents–not raising taxes and not gutting the basic-needs healthcare they depend on. This bill is a slap in the face to the hardworking Americans who will only see their taxes go up and their hospitals close down. I refuse to allow the American people to be double-taxed. I urge the Rules Committee to bring this amendment to repeal the SALT cap to the floor, and I am ready to work across the aisle to pass a bill that actually delivers for the American people.”
