NEW: Congressman Tran Votes to Safeguard Our Communities As President Trump Pardons Violent Felons Who Brutally Assaulted Police Officers
Wednesday, January 22, 2025
Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Derek Tran voted in favor of the Laken Riley Act – including an amendment to detain undocumented immigrants who are charged with, arrested for, or convicted of an offense involving an assault of a law enforcement officer, serious bodily harm, or death. Meanwhile, President Trump chose to pardon violent felons who brutally assaulted police officers on Capitol grounds. In response, Congressman Tran released the following statement:
“My neighbors’ concerns on issues of public safety and immigration reform are my concerns, too. That’s why one of my first votes in Congress was in support of the Laken Riley Act. I voted to ensure that those committing crimes, no matter their immigration status, are held to a standard of justice under the law – including individuals who assault law enforcement officers or violently harm others.
“The same cannot be said for President Trump – who just pardoned more than 1,500 criminals and conspirators, including many violent felons and insurrectionists who brutally assaulted police officers on January 6, 2021. While many of my Republican colleagues cannot seem to muster the courage to call out the President for condoning these violent assaults on our cops, I voted today to put the safety of our communities first and crack down on violent criminals who attack those sworn to protect us. These members’ silence on this issue is both unfathomable and shameful.
“I hope my Republican colleagues get serious about protecting our police officers and addressing our immigration system moving forward, because today’s vote was not a comprehensive solution to the challenges we’re facing. We need some major bipartisan solutions to safeguard DACA recipients, protect legal pathways to citizenship, and promote opportunities for law-abiding immigrants to achieve the American Dream. The work continues.”
