Tuesday, February 18, 2025

Washington, DC – Congressman Derek Tran has been officially appointed to his subcommittees on the House Armed Services Committee (HASC) and the Small Business Committee (SBC)

On the Small Business Committee, Congressman Tran has been appointed Ranking Member of the Oversight, Investigations, and Regulations Subcommittee. As Ranking Member, Congressman Tran will serve as the top Democrat on the Subcommittee and help influence the agenda of the panel. Congressman Tran was also appointed as a member of the Contracting and Infrastructure Subcommittee. On the House Armed Services Committee, Congressman Tran has been appointed as a member of the Readiness Subcommittee and the Intelligence and Special Operations Subcommittee.

In response to the news of these prestigious appointments, Congressman Tran released the following statement:

“I’m deeply honored to serve on these powerful committees in service of the people of California’s 45th district, our economy, and our best interests as a nation,” said Congressman Derek Tran (CA-45). “My committee assignments will allow me to play a key role in protecting and advancing the needs of my constituents, supporting our small businesses, and ensuring a strong national defense. I look forward to working alongside both my Republican and Democratic colleagues to ensure a safer and more prosperous future for all Americans.”

“I’m thrilled to welcome Congressman Tran to the Small Business Committee and am excited to work with him in his capacity as Subcommittee Ranking Member,” said Nydia M. Velázquez, Ranking Member of the House Small Business Committee. “From his time serving in the Army, to founding his own law practice, and co-owning a small business, Mr. Tran brings invaluable insight to our work. I’m confident his dedication and experience will help us better serve America’s small businesses and deliver real results for entrepreneurs nationwide.”

“Congressman Tran’s eight-years of military service—including his activation for Operation Noble Eagle / Enduring Freedom—his civilian career as a litigator, and his historic election as the first Vietnamese American to represent Little Saigon, Orange County in Congress will provide uniquely valuable insight for the work that we do in the HASC. I look forward to working together on the HASC in the 119th Congress,” said Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.), Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee.

The House Small Business Committee provides direct oversight of matters affecting small businesses, including access to capital, resources for minority, veteran and women entrepreneurs, and Small Business Administration (SBA) lending programs. In particular, the Subcommittee on Oversight, Investigations, and Regulations will review the regulatory burdens imposed on small businesses by federal agencies and how those burdens may be alleviated. The Subcommittee on Contracting and Infrastructure will assess the federal procurement system, including those programs designed specifically to enhance participation by small businesses in providing goods and services to the federal government. The Subcommittee will review the broad scope of opportunities available to small businesses for rebuilding and modernizing the nations’ infrastructure.

The House Armed Services Committee has direct oversight of federal defense and national security policy, ongoing military operations, organization of the U.S. Department of Defense and Department of Energy, counter-drug programs, acquisition and industry base policy, and more. In particular, the Subcommittee on Readiness oversees policy and programs and accounts related to military readiness, training, logistics and maintenance, military construction, organic industrial base, environment, military installations and real property management, family housing, base realignments and closures, and energy. The Subcommittee on Intelligence and Special Operations oversees policy and programs and accounts related to military intelligence, national intelligence, countering weapons of mass destruction, counter-proliferation, counter-terrorism, other sensitive military operations, special operations forces, information operations policy and military information support operations, and security cooperation.

California’s 45th congressional district is home to Joint Forces Training Base Los Alamitos (JFTB-LA), a premier joint training site in the National Guard that supports Component Commands. JBFT-LA is also where Rep. Tran trained during his military service. California’s 45th district is also home to a robust ecosystem of small businesses, many of which are run by minority, veteran, and women entrepreneurs.
