Representative Tran Releases Statement on H.R. 875
Washington, DC – U.S. Representative Derek Tran released a statement following his vote on H.R. 875, the Jeremy and Angel Seay and Sergeant Brandon Mendoza Protect Our Communities from DUIs Act of 2025:
“My first priority will always be the safety of our community. Throughout my time in Congress, I have consistently consulted with law enforcement officials and community leaders to ensure that I always represent the best interests of my constituents. As the Trump Administration has increased immigration enforcement actions in our communities, I have been gravely concerned by the overreach of federal authority and the obscuring of due process rights for those who have been detained.
“After consulting with local law enforcement and carefully considering the impact of the legislation, I voted against H.R. 875 because this legislation cedes too much local power to the federal government and provides the Trump Administration with another tool to disrupt communities by targeting and scapegoating immigrants. Serious DUI convictions already make an individual inadmissible and deportable under current law. This bill would only grow federal power further by making any non-citizen, including lawful permanent residents such as green card holders, immediately deportable. I am privileged to have the support of many law enforcement officials in Southern California, and I will continue to work closely with these leaders to ensure that our communities are a safe place where every family has the chance to thrive.”
H.R. 875 makes a conviction for driving while intoxicated or impaired grounds for barring a non-U.S. national from admission into the United States or deportation of any non-citizen, including lawful permanent residents like green card holders. The bill renders these individuals inadmissible or deportable regardless of whether the DUI is labeled a misdemeanor or a felony under local law.
