Rep. Derek Tran Releases Statement on Passage of GOP Budget that Will Gut Health Care, Raise Taxes
Washington, DC – Rep. Derek Tran (CA-45) responded to the passage of a Republican-led budget bill that makes dramatic cuts to basic-needs services like Medicaid, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and Social Security.
After a nearly 22-hour markup of over 500 amendments to the GOP budget proposal, the House Committee on Rules brought the legislation to the House floor for a middle-of-the-night vote on passage of the House Republicans’ budget bill to slash essential services and give tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy.
This bill will have devastating impacts on thousands of people in California’s 45th congressional district and millions around the country. Nearly 14 million people nationwide are now at risk of losing healthcare coverage through Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act, including over 250,000 people in CA-45 alone. This bill also threatens access to food for the 2.5 million children in California who depend on free school lunches, and for the almost 60,000 people in CA-45 who rely on SNAP to keep food on the table.
“Last night, I voted NO on the House Republican budget bill. I firmly rejected this attempt to kick millions of Americans off Medicaid, double-tax millions of California’s hardworking families by capping the SALT deduction, and take food off the table for our working families, our children, and our seniors. Republicans made these draconian cuts just to give tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy. I am dismayed by this betrayal of our constituents,” said Rep. Derek Tran. “I grew up on Medi-Cal, on SNAP, and Section 8 housing. I’m in Congress today because I got the support I needed to give back to my country as a soldier and a business owner. I will always work with my fellow Members of Congress, Democrat or Republican, to bring down costs, expand benefits and services, and deliver for all Americans. Our constituents sent us here to fight for them. They are looking to us for answers, but last night, all Republicans could offer were higher costs and less access to healthcare. As long as I am in Congress, I will use my voice to stand up for hard-working American families.”
Congressman Derek Tran represents California’s 45th Congressional District.
